In an ideal world, it would be easy and affordable to get a professional facial. But booking an appointment with a reputable esthetician who won't break the bank is anything but easy. And when you do find a facialist you love and spend serious bucks to see them, you might have to save up to go back again. Unfortunately for our bank accounts, facials do make a big difference in the long-term look and health of your skin — that post-treatment glow is just one benefit — so it's worth the splurge.
But considering that facials can be pretty pricey (between $150 and $250, and much higher in L.A. and NYC), how often should you see an esthetician? Well, that depends mostly on your skin type. Shani Darden, esthetician and founder of Shani Darden Skin Care, whose clients include Jessica Alba, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Shay Mitchell, recommends "a facial every five to six weeks unless you have acne, and then it should be at least every three weeks." Those with active breakouts will want to see someone who doesn't just do hydration and lifting treatments but also "cleans you out" with safe extractions. Then, once the acne has calmed down, you can go longer in between appointments.
There are more options for experienced estheticians in major cities, but if you're somewhere without a lot to choose from, Darden says the "best place would be a dermatologist office." Your treatment might even be covered by insurance. And if you can only see a skin care expert once in a while, that's OK too. But it's important to get not only a facial but also a consultation. That way, you can ensure the products you're using at home work for your unique skin type and concerns. "I always give samples of what I think they should use," Darden says. If clients really love what they're already using, "I look up all the ingredients to advise whether to keep using it or take it out." Listen to your esthetician and you'll have the glowy skin of your dreams in no time.
