Despite what filtered images on social media may lead you to believe, nobody’s skin is perfectly smooth. We all have some texture — and that is completely normal. But if the skin on your arms or legs is visibly bumpy — like you have goosebumps even in the dead of summer — you may have keratosis pilaris, sometimes referred to as “strawberry skin.”
According to the Cleveland Clinic, this common skin concern (which affects up to 40% of adults) is caused by a buildup of keratin, one of the proteins that make up your hair, skin, and nails. Normally, dead keratin cells flake off naturally. But in some cases, they can build up and clog your pores, causing small, flaky bumps to develop around your hair follicles.
While keratosis pilaris (or KP) is harmless, there’s no denying that dealing with rough, bumpy skin can be frustrating. Fortunately, there are things you can do to help promote a smoother skin texture. Start by incorporating exfoliation into your weekly body care routine. Dr. Danny Guo of @derm.tok recommends swapping out your usual body wash for an exfoliating option, such as CeraVe Fragrance-Free Salicylic Acid Body Wash, once a week. You’ll also want to make sure to moisturize after every shower or bath: As the Mayo Clinic notes, dry skin can cause KP to flare up.
For a one-two punch against unwanted bumps, reach for a body cream that contains gentle chemical exfoliants, such as AHAs or BHAs.
