One of the most annoying things about shopping is that there’s no real standard in sizing. A size 10 pair of jeans in one retailer is not the same as a size 10 in another. The calf width of boots is the same way. While some brands have “wide” and even “extra-wide” options, the actual circumference of each varies greatly — and if you have curvier calves, that makes buying boots that fit next to impossible without trying them on. Fortunately, brands are getting smarter this season and offering even more sizing options, as well as online measuring information to help you choose.
To start, grab your tape measure and wrap it around the widest part of your calf. Then, use that number to shop our picks for the best wide-calf boots for fall and winter that will actually fit well and make you feel confident all season long. Note: The circumference included is based on a size 6; as the size goes up, so does the circumference (by a few centimeters).
Naturalizer Rena 2 Wide-Calf Riding Boot
In August, Naturalizer launched its most inclusive collection yet, featuring on-trend leather boots in sizes 5M to 12XW with wide and extra-wide calf options. The brand studied more than 500 wide-calf consumers, developing new molds based on the precise measurements of 170 women, and ensuring an even better calf fit with less gapping and fluting. Since riding boots are back in a big way, we love the Rena 2, which comes in wide (16.14 inches) and extra-wide (16.54 inches).
Vince Camuto Sangeti Wide-Calf Boot
You can’t scroll through fashion TikTok without seeing someone pulling on a pair of Vince Camuto boots with a wide grin, thrilled they fit over their curvy calves. The brand continues to drop timeless and trendy leather boots in wide and extra-wide calf options in sizes 5 to 12. One of the most popular — and wearable — is the Sangeti boot with a comfortable 3-inch heel. It comes in wide (15.8 inches) and extra-wide (16.9 inches) calf sizes.
Dolce Vita Raj Wide-Calf Boots
In September, Dolce Vita rolled out its wide and extra-wide collection (in sizes 6 to 13), with extended calf options on bestselling styles, plus brand-new boots. For the launch, Dolce Vita is offering free sizing kits, which include a measuring tape and detailed instructions. These kits are available online and in-store to help customers measure their calves accurately before purchasing. We especially like the Raj Western boots, which come in wide (16.5 inches) and extra-wide (18.9 inches).
DuoBoots Verity Knee-High Boots
We dare you to find more calf width options than from DuoBoots. These luxe shoes are designed in London and handmade in Portugal, with eight different calf options from 11.8 inches to 19.7 inches in sizes 5 to 12. The brand has a very handy online portal to help you measure your calf and then choose the right fit. (Some boots have more stretch than others, for example.) We have our eyes on the Verity boots, which have that cool equestrian feel.
Billini Oshea Curve
Though most of Billini’s trendy — and more affordable — boots come in sizes 5 to 12, calf options vary from boot to boot, with what the brand calls “curve” and “extended curve” styles. For example, our favorite Oshea combat boots come in curve (17.95 inches), while the equally cute Western Urson boots come in extended curve, made to fit calf sizes 18.11 inches to 21.42 inches. Each boot also varies in foot width, so be sure to check the “measurement” section for each style before making your choice.
