Thanks to glam-goth celebs including Jenna Ortega, Taylor Swift, and Chappell Roan, the “dark feminine” aesthetic is trending as the next beauty fad to take the reins from summer’s brat-core. While we’ll always remember summer 2024 as the time pop music made a resurgence, there was a subtle fashion shift that occurred that was a bit on the edgy side.
If you type “dark feminine energy” into Pinterest, you’ll see photos of Lana Del Rey, endless all-black lace looks, and even manifestation tips and affirmations to help awaken your dark feminine spirit. TikTok user Olivia Sage even said we went from “clean girl to mean girl” in terms of makeup aesthetics, which she admits is outside of many people’s comfort zones. But you can dip into your own dark feminine energy slowly, by opting for a wine-red manicure or winged eyeliner that’s, as Swift herself puts it, “sharp enough to kill a man.” Berry-stained lips and subtle shimmery highlighter also help create the mood. Or simply throw on a witchy black dress with bell sleeves, lacy, draped fabric, and knee-high boots.
If you want to incorporate this trend into a more everyday look, try starting with just makeup or clothing. Keep your regular pair of jeans and add a flowy black top with bell sleeves to channel your inner goddess. Or if you want to make a change in makeup, do your eyes on the lighter side and make your lips the star of the show with a deep berry shade. Celebs on the red carpet, such as Laverne Cox and Mindy Kaling, incorporate the trend by wearing all-black and adding a few goth accessories with pearls and/or crosses. Get creative and have some fun with it — you can’t do the trend wrong.
