The start of a new year often brings with it a desire for change. Some embrace change by tweaking their habits (hello, New Year’s resolutions); others seek to try out a new look. If you fall into the latter camp, you may want to consider experimenting with a new hair color in 2025. Hair color is fairly easy to change, relatively low commitment (you can usually change it back), and incredibly transformative, especially if your chosen hue is a major departure from the color you’re currently rocking. If you need some ideas to consider ahead of your next salon visit, keep scrolling. We chatted with three experts for the lowdown on the biggest hair color trends set to make waves — pun intended — in 2025.
1. Mocha Mousse
“For 2025, I think we’ll see a lot of soft, multidimensional colors — think natural-looking shades with a lot of depth,” celebrity colorist and Tangle Teezer creative director Ryan Pearl shares. Topping the list of shades set to make a splash is Mocha Mousse, Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2025. The muted brunette complements a wide range of skin tones (and undertones) and can easily be made lighter or darker, depending on your preferences. Pair it with a dark brown shadow root for a low-maintenance hair color that strikes the perfect balance of elegant and effortless.
2. Pure Copper
If you thought cowboy copper was just another fleeting color trend, think again. According to Rahua co-founder Anna Ayers, “coppers, gold-reds, strawberry blondes, ambers, and chestnut tones” will be everywhere in 2025, both on and off the red carpet.
If you’re itching to try a red hair color for yourself, Schwarzkopf global color expert Jonathan Colombini advises going for “a true copper red — nothing with any purple undertones.” Ask your stylist for a warm copper hue with subtle golden undertones, or DIY the look with an at-home hair dye such as IGK Permanent Color Kit in Copper Cola.
3. Espresso Brown
“Typically, the trend is to go darker in the winter,” Colombini says. Chocolate brown, black, and deeper chestnut shades are all popular during the winter months — but in 2025, we’ll likely see fewer chocolates and more deep espresso browns. This sultry hue feels dramatic yet still maintains a natural feel, thanks to the presence of subtle cinnamon and bronze tones woven throughout. If you’re wary of committing to anything too dark, ask your stylist to use a hair gloss or demi-permanent color rather than the traditional permanent hair dye. Or try lightening up the hue with subtle face-framing babylights for brightness and dimension.
4. Honey Blonde
This year, expect to see your platinum blonde friends trading in their signature icy hue for something a touch warmer. “Consumer preferences are shifting toward richer, [more] natural-looking shades,” Ayer explains. Pearl concurs, adding that in 2025, “the whole high-maintenance blonde vibe may feel a little dated.” For blondes, that means a preference for warmer hues, such as honey blonde and butter blonde, both in the form of all-over color and balayage. Take inspiration from Nicole Kidman’s golden blonde for an on-trend twist on your go-to hue.
5. Ruby Red
While many of 2025’s top-trending hair colors skew more natural-looking than dramatic, there are exceptions. Dark ruby red is one dramatic hue that Colombini says we’re likely to see more of in 2025. This deep, sultry shade bridges the gap between bright red and espresso brown and features a slightly cooler undertone than classic crimsons and cherries. If you’re not sure whether you’re ready to commit to a fantasy color, test-drive it with a semi-permanent hair dye or use a tinted conditioner, such as Overtone Color Depositing Conditioner in Red for Brown. Or mix up a few semi-permanent hair dyes and create your own custom hue. As Pearl explains, “2025 is going to be all about personal expression with hair, whether that’s through color, cut, or texture.” So don’t feel the need to lean into any specific trend if it doesn’t feel right for you — do what makes you feel confident and happy.
