On those days when you just have no idea what to wear to work, to an event, or just out running errands, having a few go-to basics that you can rely on is key. Basics can help you get dressed quicker and look put-together, and they typically include a black fitted T-shirt, a white button-down, a pair of denim that always fits right, a nice pair of slacks, and of course a coat, such as a trench or moto jacket.
“High-quality basics are all about the fabric, fit, and durability,” fashion stylist Sharon Warten explains. “They don’t have to break the bank, but they should definitely stand the test of time — except if it's white.” When it comes to white pieces, Warten says it makes sense to go with cheaper options “since we are all human and stains do happen.” The last thing you want to do is spill something you can’t get out on a $100 T-shirt.
So, what makes a high-quality basic? According to Warten, it’s all about the fabric makeup. “Natural fabrics like cotton, linen, or cashmere are your best bet,” she says. “They are super breathable and comfortable.” They will also hold up over time with the proper care, but make sure to always follow the laundry instructions on the label of your item.
If you need some shopping inspo, Warten recommends Aritzia, Agolde, Rag & Bone, and Anine Bing for classic styles that are high quality and will last over time. She also loves Everlane, which is a bit more affordable and well known for its sustainability efforts.
Even more budget-friendly brands include Uniqlo and L.L.Bean, which offer a variety of high-quality basics for under $100. We’re also big fans of Quince, whose entire mission statement is high-quality basics at affordable prices. The brand even offers $50 cashmere pieces for the winter.
