During rushed mornings or at the end of a long day, you probably don't give your daily shower routine much thought. If you're anything like us, the process happens largely on autopilot. But as the seasons change, you may want to take a beat to assess your usual routine — especially if you're experiencing dryness on your face and/or body.
According to cosmetic chemist Kristina Holey, director of skin health for Marie Veronique, exposure to dry winter air "can lead to increased barrier depletion and dysfunction," which increases the likelihood of developing dry, flaky, or irritated skin. Spending lots of time thawing your limbs in a steamy shower, though it feels nice, can exacerbate these issues.
One of the best ways to help prevent your skin from getting overly dry, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), is to opt for cooler showers. However, as Holey admits, that's not the easiest advice to follow. "An alternative approach is to focus on the products used both in the shower and after," she says. If your skin is dry, she recommends avoiding "strong acids, fragrances, and potentially irritating essential oils" that can disrupt the skin. It's also a good idea to swap out your go-to body wash for a gentle, hydrating cleanser (if you need a recommendation, we're fond of the SEEN Fragrance-Free Body Wash).
Your post-shower routine is as important as your in-shower routine. After lathering up, gently pat your skin dry with a clean towel, then apply a moisturizer to help lock in the hydration you added in the shower. Holey recommends Marie Veronique Body Barrier Emulsion, a deeply hydrating, yet refreshingly lightweight, body lotion. If you're looking for something slightly richer, Nécessaire The Body Lotion is a great option. It's packed with nourishing ingredients and delivers up to 48 hours of moisture to replenish and soothe dry skin. Finally, remember that healthy skin starts on the inside. Holey recommends drinking plenty of water to help keep your skin feeling hydrated throughout the chilly winter season.
