You know the feeling. You swipe on your favorite lipstick, and it looks flawless…for five minutes. We’ve all been there. Luckily, makeup artist Val Garland has a few pro tips for keeping lipstick from smudging or settling into fine lines, so you can make that color last from your morning coffee to evening cocktails.
1. Prime Your Lips with a Pore Minimizer
Garland suggests starting with a pore minimizer (yes, one for your face) to fill in any fine lines around the lips, especially if you have areas prone to dryness. “I’m taking a flat square brush, and I’m going to outline my lips,” she explains. By working the product into any cracks or lines, you’ll create a smoother surface and a barrier that prevents lipstick from traveling. Garland’s go-to? Benefit The POREfessional Pore Minimizing Primer, which she uses as an invisible boundary around her lip line.
2. Define the Shape with Lip Liner
If you have fine lines or just want that extra staying power, a lip liner is your best friend. According to Garland, “Using a lip liner is really good if you have a lot of lines around your mouth because it will help to reinforce that barrier.” Start by softening the pencil on the back of your hand, then outline your lips to lock in the shape and prevent color bleed.
3. Apply Lipstick in Layers
Now it’s time for the color. Garland applies her lipstick straight from the bullet and layers it over the liner, creating a rich, glossy finish. You're layering in extra longevity by building your lipstick over the liner and pore minimizer.
With these easy tricks, you’ll never have to worry about your lipstick running again. Pucker up!
