Everything old is new again, and it feels like fashion trends are coming back even faster these days. In the early 2000s, many of us wore cargo pants in the most Y2K way, with baggy legs, cinched drawstring cuffs, and sky-high heels à la Jenny from the Block. Now, cargo pants are back in a big way — but even J.Lo herself is wearing them differently. While you'll probably see teens rock low-rise, ultrabaggy cargos, those of us who are a bit older are going for sleeker options we can wear on a casual Friday at the office or to lunch with friends.
One of the best things about cargo pants is that they really are seasonless; they look just as good with a sweater and boots as they do with a tank and sandals. Just look for a classic pair with a straight (not skinny, not baggy) leg and just a few pockets, such as Paige Alexis Cargo Pants or Universal Standard Karlee Stretch Cotton Twill Cargo Pants. You can also go for a more wide-leg, trouser-style pair, like Tibi's Crispy Nylon Stella Pleated Cargo Pants, which are so easy to dress up or down. And you really can't go wrong with an animal-print or camo version, both huge trends for fall. Our favorite printed styles are Damson Madder Dion Leopard Carpenter Cargo Pants and Gap Cargo Easy Pants.
Now that you have your cargos, how do you wear them in a fresh, 2024 way? Skip the heels (unless they're attached to a chunky boot) and instead opt for a pair of trendy ballet flats or sleek sneakers. It's OK if your pants pool a little bit at the bottom — that's part of the look. Add a white tee and a cardigan, like influencer Natalie Helen, and you have the perfect fall outfit. As it gets colder, swap the cardigan for an oversized sweater and pop a jacket on top. How chic!
