There are a few fashion “rules” that have entered the zeitgeist and never left — such as the famous one stating that you shouldn’t wear white after Labor Day. (False! You should wear whatever you want whenever you want.) Another says you should never mix your metals when styling an outfit or jewelry. Mixing metals essentially means that you’re layering silver bracelets with gold rings or mixing gold hardware on your bag with silver accessories. But contrary to what we’ve been told, it’s not a fashion faux pas. In fact, it’s actually pretty cool.
“From boho chic to fine luxury jewelry to chunky chains, [mixing metals] is all about self-expression and your style,” London-based stylist Rebekah Roy says. “I love this look because it’s so individual, it’s so unique to you. The pieces you choose tell your story and your mood.”
Content creator Paige DeSorbo, for one, effortlessly mixes metals by incorporating gold tones into the fabric of her outfits, in addition to her jewelry picks. The result is an edgy look that has an individual touch, even though she’s dressed up for a formal event.
Though mixing gold and silver is the obvious way to mix metals, Roy says you shouldn’t discount other hues. “Think about rose gold, gunmetal, and stacking sterling silver and gold rings and bracelets,” she suggests. It may seem intimidating at first, but just remember: Balance is key. “The key to mastering the layered look is to choose necklaces that complement each other. Choose the same intensity of color plus variety in sizes and lengths,” Roy says. “Think about balance and proportion, the length, the link size, and even the theme.”
Moral of the story? Have fun with it. If something looks off as you’re mixing, change it up. The goal isn’t to follow a trend perfectly; it should always be about expressing your individual style in a way that makes you feel great about yourself.
