Do I Really Need To Use Makeup Setting Spray?

When you’re getting ready to go out, there’s nothing more frustrating than crafting the perfect makeup look with cat eyeliner as sharp as claws and a base that’s flawlessly smooth — only to have it fade or melt off of your face the second you step outside. If this happens to you, setting spray can help. 

“Setting sprays work by creating a thin, protective layer over your makeup, which helps to lock it in place and prevent it from moving or fading,” celebrity makeup artist and Primark’s U.S. beauty ambassador Jenna Kristina explains. Ingredients including alcohol and polymers help create this protective layer that’s flexible with the movement of your skin. The formula provides some waterproofing for your makeup look, too, but usually not enough to jump into a pool. What it will do is keep your makeup from sweating off or fading away. 

“Setting spray is great for anyone looking to make their makeup last longer and stay fresh with minimal touch-ups,” Kristina says. “If you’re someone who needs their look to endure long workdays, events, or even just [someone who] prefers a low-maintenance approach, a setting spray can be a game-changer.” However, she notes that if you need to switch up your makeup throughout the day for any reason, you might want to skip this step, as it can make removal slightly more difficult. 

So, do you need to use setting spray? Of course not, especially if you’re rocking a no-makeup makeup look for running errands. But if you have a full day ahead of you and want to protect your beat, it can be worth the extra effort.
