As anyone who has wrestled themselves into a tangle of polyester under what could only be described as the world’s most unflattering fluorescent lights can attest: Nothing takes the “fun” out of “fun in the sun” quite like swimsuit shopping. Many affordable options feel flimsy, sizing options are nonexistent, and styles dwindle significantly past the L-XL range.
I have faced this swimsuit struggle year after year, dreading the day when I go back to the store to find that coveted needle in a haystack: swimwear that’s stylish, durable, and flattering to my body, not whatever magical, unattainable figure most swimsuits are seemingly made for. But this year, I’m done wandering around the mall (or, let’s be real, Amazon) with my fingers crossed.
Instead, I did some digging to find nine of the best swimsuit brands with inclusive sizing and suits you’d actually want to wear. From thrifty Target finds to stunning designer pieces, these swimsuits will have you feeling ready to turn that pool deck or sandbar into your runway.
Walmart
- Size Range: S to 3X
- Pros: Wide range of styles, affordable
- Cons: Not as durable, more modest styles
While you’re picking up toilet paper and cat litter, you might be surprised to see all the cute swimwear at Walmart. To wit, the Time & Tru brand is an especially great option for inclusive sizing and fit. Featuring a wide range of styles, including one-piece, tankini, bikini, high-rise, and low-rise suits in multiple colors, you’re sure to find an affordable swimsuit that fits your vibe (and most importantly, your body).
Of course, not every Walmart piece is going to be a hit. For as many long-lasting swimsuits as I’ve bought from Walmart, I’ve had just as many degrade, stretch, or fade over time. But for less than $30, that’s a bet I’m willing to make for a summer or two.
Target
- Size Range: XXS to 3X
- Pros: Affordable, many inclusive brands
- Cons: Not as durable, sizes sell out
Another big-budget retailer that stocks inclusive swimwear is Target, and this year, there are more than ever. Kona Sol is a more modest — but still chic — brand, while Wild Fable is younger and more trend-conscious but no less inclusive. Shade & Shore hawks swimwear by bra size for a better fit, though the largest size is only a 38DD. Finally, Target’s collaboration with Lands End offers classic styles with a bit of a higher price point. But you do get more durable swimwear with extra features, such as UV protection and chlorine resistance.
The best part? If you’re like me and have to try on a swimsuit before you commit to buying it, these suits are available at your local Target store, not just online.
Curvy Beach
- Size Range: L to 4X
- Pros: Multiple print options, woman-owned, sexy styles
- Cons: Less coverage and support for fuller figures
Often called "the plus-size string bikini expert," Curvy Beach offers flirty swimwear made to be seen. I love that the brand offers multiple cuts in the same print, making it easy to choose your favorite. And for those who love a good mono-print moment, Curvy Beach even has matching scrunchies to coordinate with your suit. That said, a string bikini is a string bikini. So, if you’re looking for sturdy support and coverage, this might not be the brand for you.
Kitty and Vibe
- Size Range: XS to 6XL
- Pros: Unique designs, ethically made
- Cons: On the pricier side, online-only
In a world of humdrum florals and stripes, Kitty and Vibe’s modern, artsy prints are a welcome breath of fresh air. This brand has adorable styles, all with the same size options, and it’s one of the only labels out there selling “bikini bottoms based on your butt size,” with two booty size options for every hip size. You’ll never feel like there’s just too little fabric again.
Kitty and Vibe is also dedicated to sustainability: All swimsuits are made from 100% recycled materials and are made ethically by a women-run factory in Bogota, Colombia.
Alpine Butterfly
- Size Range: XS to 6X
- Pros: Woman-owned and ethically made, sustainable model
- Cons: Made-to-order can mean sellouts and longer wait times, online-only
Alpine Butterfly’s swimwear proves you can wear on-trend bikinis, one-pieces, and tankinis at any size. The woman-owned brand hawks typically feminine styles (as opposed to more athletic ones) with ruffles, frills, and colorful prints. It’s what the brand does best and what makes them unique. Even the more modest swimwear styles have unique accents. Add a cover-up, bomber jacket, or headband to really get in on the Alpine Butterfly vibe. Prices can go up to $200, but these are pieces you’ll have in your closet year after year.
Good American
- Size Range: XXS to 5XL
- Pros: On-trend styles for curves
- Cons: Pricier, sizes sell out
Good American launched in 2016 by Emma Grede (the CEO and co-founder) and Khloe Kardashian to make jeans for every body. They’ve since expanded into trend-focused swimwear with the same size inclusivity in mind. Although they don’t have as many style options as some other retailers, the bathing suits are diverse. Choose a teeny red bikini or a lace-up one-piece — or both, depending on your mood. I especially love how Good American’s website shows the swimwear on different-sized models.
Andie
- Size Range: XS to XXXL
- Pros: Classic looks, focus on fit
- Cons: Separate online section for upper sizing
What I love about Andie swim is its focus on fit and durability, ensuring you won’t need a new swimsuit when next summer rolls around. There are options for those with a long torso, those with a fuller bust, those who want more bottom coverage, and more. What I don’t love is that you have to shop by “plus size” to find styles over an XL.
Tomboy X
- Size Range: XS to 6XL
- Pros: Eco-friendly, UPF 50 stretch fabric
- Cons: Pricier brand
Tomboy X blends inclusive fashion and function in its extensive swimwear line made of quick-drying, UPF 50 stretch fabric. (Yep, your Tomboy X swimwear will act as a second layer of defense against harmful UVA/B rays.) Queer, women-founded, and dedicated to sustainability and fair labor, Tomboy X is a fantastic option for those looking for alternatives to swimwear’s trendy silhouettes.
This swimwear line is divided into print collections, with several styles available in each print. Featuring swim tops, tanks, shirts, shorts, and bodysuits, Tomboy X’s swimwear line offers a wide variety of coverage and silhouette options for all genders.
Bravissimo
- Size Range: XS to 3XL, 28DD to 38HH
- Pros: Fits like a bra, great support and coverage
- Cons: Not for plus-sizes with smaller chests
Bravissimo is all about full support and great fashion. With swimsuits and tops designed to feel as supportive as a bra, Bravissimo offers band and cup sizes you won’t find in most places, up to an HH. I love the variety of the swimwear, too. From soft, feminine florals to bright, modern cuts, to sporty zip-ups and one-pieces, there is a supportive option for any style or aesthetic. I do wish, however, that the brand had even more band sizes (past 38) so more folks could get in on the fun.
