Another day, another skin care hack, and this one we’re especially into. It’s all about doubling the power of your moisturizer and boosting hydration. And considering the weather is getting cooler every day, we need all the moisture we can get. According to Gabrielle Harrison, esthetician and founder of SISH Beauty, moisture sandwiching “refers to a process of layering products on damp skin in order to trap moisture and lock it in.” Think of it like, well, a sandwich, where each layer helps boost the efficacy of the one above and below it.
To get started, dampen your skin with a facial spray or just good old tap water. Then, apply your lightweight, water-based products. Seal that in with a thicker, heavier cream on top — while the skin is still damp. For example, you can start with a hyaluronic acid or glycerin-based serum and then seal it with a moisturizer that works best with your skin type. Those with drier skin will love La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer, while those with oily, acne-prone, or combination skin should go for a more lightweight, oil-free option, such as CeraVe Ultra-Light Moisturizing Gel. Harrison says this stacking method “promotes better product absorption and efficacy.”
Although moisture sandwiching can be done on any and all skin types, Harrison recommends checking ingredients before blindly adding additional hydration. “Some sandwiching techniques involve using a rich cream or Vaseline as the final step,” Harrison says. “However, these types of products can trap oil and trigger breakouts for oilier skin types.” Fortunately, even lightweight moisturizers will still provide the hydration you need — especially when sandwiched.
