Putting on a cooling sheet mask after taking off your makeup at the end of the day is instantly refreshing — especially if you keep your masks in the fridge (like we do). It’s a small and inexpensive way to feel like you’re getting a luxurious spa treatment right in your living room. But have you ever wondered if that sheet mask is actually doing anything for your skin? We tapped Anil Sharma, M.D., who specializes in dermatology and hair restoration, to find out the real deal behind these trending masks.
Generally, your skin is safe with these masks, but not all masks are created equally. “Ultimately, it depends on the type of sheet masks you use and what your goal is,” Dr. Sharma explains. “Most of them are soaked in serums with ingredients to hydrate, brighten, or calm your skin. The mask helps these ingredients soak in better.” Dr. Sharma notes, however, that a sheet mask’s effects are usually only short-term. That said, they can still be great for giving your skin a boost of hydration, especially during drier seasons.
Just be sure to follow the directions on the packaging. On social media, “morning shed” videos have gained popularity, in which someone falls asleep with a myriad of beauty treatments on. This usually includes a sheet mask, among other things. “I'd recommend looking for ones with ingredients like hyaluronic acid for moisture, ceramides to repair your skin barrier, and antioxidants to fight damage,” Dr. Sharma says. “If you’re going to sleep with a mask on, make sure it’s specifically labeled as an overnight mask. These are made to be safe and hydrating while staying on for hours."
As for our favorites, CosRx Snail Mucin Sheet Mask is our affordable go-to for hydration, while 111Skin Rose Gold Brightening Facial Treatment Mask is the luxe one we grab for stellar anti-aging ingredients.
