Whether you like the aesthetic they add to your outfit or you’re dealing with fluctuating pant sizes, belts are a mainstay in anyone’s closet. Sometimes, belts can even change the entire vibe of the pants you wear them with, making a look more elevated, put-together, and even professional. But with so many different options on the market, it can be difficult to know what types of belts to keep on hand — and how to style the fun ones.
“When shopping for belts under $100, I try to find the best-quality versions that will look great with almost every look and will last, wear after wear,” explains Tara West, award-winning fashion stylist, lifestyle blogger, podcast co-host, and on-air style expert. “I look for materials like real leather, a sturdy faux leather, or suede,” she adds.
West shares her tips for spotting quality craftsmanship at an affordable price: “Details like tight stitching, an eye-catching buckle, and adjustable sizing make a big difference in the longevity of a quality belt,” she says. Neutral shades such as black and tan can go with many different outfits, while a pop of color — we love red — can be a fun on-trend addition. Don’t be afraid of neutral-colored prints, such as leopard, to add even more interest to an otherwise simple outfit.
So, what are West’s go-to places to shop? Madewell and Target are staples. She suggests Madewell for more classic and timeless styles, and Target for trending looks. If you want something a bit more striking, West also recommends Anthropologie, which is known for “featuring statement buckles and textured finishes.” And if you’re OK with spending a little more than $100, we also love B-Low the Belt for designer trends without the luxury price tag.
