Short hair is officially “in” for 2025. At Sunday night’s Golden Globes, the biggest stars skipped the long beach waves and down-to-there extensions and went for shorter hair. As we drooled over all the gold gowns — a big fashion trend for the night — we couldn’t help but notice four Golden Globe nominees sporting short styles, from bobs to pixie cuts. Some celebrities actually chopped their hair, while others relied on some artfully placed pins to create the illusion of a cut.
Emma Stone is one star that took the plunge for real. In fact, the new pixie we saw on the red carpet was actually Stone’s buzz cut in a phase of growth. (She reportedly shaved her head for her role in the upcoming film Save the Green Planet.) For the Globes, Stone’s longtime hairstylist Mara Roszak trimmed her hair into a cute ’90s pixie, and styled it using a new launch from Roszak’s own brand Rōz, Evergreen Styling Cream. It helps tame flyaways and give the hair a light hold. Roszak also used the L’Oreal AirLight Pro Hair Dryer to set the direction for the hair.
Selena Gomez and Zendaya, on the other hand, employed a little hairstyling magic to get the look of shorter strands. Gomez’s stylist Renato Campora used Sophia Loren, Lauren Bacall, and Marilyn Monroe as inspiration for his client’s vintage-inspired look. On damp hair, he applied Joico Defy Damage Protective Shield and Dream Blowout Thermal Protection Crème from mid-length down. The brand’s JoiWhip Design Foam was added to the roots for volume. He then blow-dried her hair with GHD Helios Hair Dryer and a 1.3-inch round brush, lifting the hair upward. The next part involved lots of curling and pinning using different iron sizes. And even though they were going for a short style, he added some Great Lengths Hair Extensions for density. After the hair was cooled and pins were removed, “the side part [was] brushed forward, while the other side [was] swept back to open the face and showcase the neck and jewelry,” Campora said in a press release.
Zendaya’s hairstylist, Coree Moreno, also channeled Old Hollywood glamour for her faux bob. Moreno even went back to basics when it came to creating the ’do. First, he applied Nexxus Volumizing Foam Hair Mousse to wet hair and put her strands in a set of vintage-inspired rollers. Zendaya then sat under a hooded dryer until her hair was 90% dry, at which point Moreno used GHD’s Helios Hair Dryer with the Professional Diffuser on the coldest temperature to set the curls out of rollers and lock in shine. He finished the look with Bellami Clip-In Extensions curled for extra volume and texture.
Finally, Abbott Elementary actress and writer Quinta Brunson turned heads in what her hairstylist Alexander Armand called “classy chic waves.” He used Camille Rose Naturals hair products to style the pixie, including his favorite Spiked Honey Mousse, which he said on social media boosts shine and allows you to “mold the hair smoothly” and effortlessly. Gorgeous!
Now you have tons of inspiration for your next big chop.
