Chances are, you’ve heard of 2B or 4C curls, or another combination of numbers and letters. The curl type naming system has been around since the 1990s. But this year, folks on social media started talking about another curl pattern: Irish. This doesn’t apply just to the tightness of the waves or curls, but describes an entire head of hair. "‘Irish hair’ refers to a mix of wavy, curly, or coarse textures, making it more challenging to manage," explains New York-based colorist and hairstylist Marie Nino. Irish waves are said to be most commonly seen in those with Irish heritage — hence the name — but really anyone can have the mix of textures.
Nino has advice on how to deal with this particular hair struggle. You can start by opting for a layered, textured haircut that enhances natural movement and reduces bulk. Second, Nino recommends styling with products that provide rich yet lightweight moisture and definition to help create more of a uniform curl pattern.
"When styling, I recommend Innersense Quiet Calm Curl Control for moisture, Innersense I Create Volume for added texture, and Innersense I Create Hold for frizz control and definition," she says. When it comes to shampoo and conditioner, you'll want to find products that keep your dual textures especially hydrated. It can help to use a sulfate-free shampoo most washes, and a clarifying shampoo every other week to encourage your curls to hold more moisture. Nino recommends looking for ingredients such as shea butter, aloe vera, and coconut oil in all your products. With these tips and the right haircut, your Irish hair pattern can thrive.
