How often you should wash your hair is a topic that always sparks much debate. While some people swear washing once a week (or even less) is good for them, others with hair that gets greasy easily wash far more frequently. If you’re unsure how much you should actually be lathering up, we asked a trichologist for advice. While it’s important not to go overboard on washing and strip your hair of its natural oils, it’s possible you may not be washing it enough.
There are a few key signs to look for. Kerry E. Yates, trichologist and founder of Colour Collective, says that if your hair is dry, flat, feels oily, or is otherwise unmanageable, these can be signs you aren’t cleansing your scalp as often as you should. She also notes that your hair may not hold a style well because there’s product buildup sitting on the hair and scalp.
If you notice that your hair is exhibiting these signs, it’s time to step up your cleansing game. You might think that how often you wash your hair is based on your hair type, but Yates disagrees with that common thinking. “Hair type does not dictate washing frequency. It really is dependent on scalp condition,” she says. “For beautiful hair, you need a healthy scalp. Unfortunately, failure to frequently wash your hair and scalp can lead to unhealthy scalp conditions.” We’re talking about dandruff, scalp inflammation, excess shedding, and even pimples on your scalp (folliculitis).
Yates says that washing at least once or twice a week is optimal — even if your hair is really dry or coarse. Daily cleansing is also fine if that’s what your hair and scalp dictate. She recommends using a gentle shampoo designed for your hair type and using your fingertips to wash, not your nails. Those with protective styles can use a cleansing rinse or a dry co-wash to remove product buildup while prolonging their braids or locs.
“Moisturizing shampoos, conditioners, and treatments rich in hydrating ingredients like oils and proteins can help improve the hair's condition,” she explains. She also says a good shampoo formula needs to have the right level of cleanser that’s both gentle and effective. Ideally, it should have a blend of conditioning agents and humectants (moisturizing ingredients) that help your specific hair type maintain elasticity and pliability. And if you’re more oily, don’t stress about washing “too much.”
